Verne Keflavik: the strongest 'green AI' story in the dataset — with two open questions

PRE-REVIEW DRAFT — right of reply sent 23 July 2026, pending until 6 August 2026

Bottom line: If you are shortlisting Nordic sites for AI training capacity on genuine renewable power, Verne’s Keflavik campus belongs on the list. Iceland’s grid is close to 100% geothermal and hydro — the one Nordic grid where “100% renewable” needs no certificate gymnastics. But two things deserve scrutiny before you sign anything.

What checks out

Update, 23 Jul 2026: Verne’s own sustainability reporting (verne.co/about-us/sustainability) publishes a 2025 Iceland PUE of 1.2, improving from 1.24 in 2023 — a genuinely strong, trending figure, self-disclosed with year-by-year Scope 1/2/3 detail rather than a bare marketing claim. We could not identify a named third-party auditor for these figures. Separately, Verne’s 2026 divestment of its UK “Volta” site to Arcus (retaining London only as HQ) is consistent with the Ardian-era strategy of concentrating capital in Nordic expansion — relevant context for the ownership picture, not a Keflavik-specific fact.

What to verify before contracting

  1. PUE is now published, but not third-party audited. Verne’s 2025 Iceland sustainability report cites a PUE of 1.20, improving from 1.24 (2023) — plausible and self-disclosed with Scope 1/2/3 detail, but no named external auditor appears on the page. Ask Verne to confirm an independent auditor or a measurement methodology under ISO/IEC 30134-2 before treating this as audited-grade evidence.
  2. Ownership is French, not Icelandic. Verne is owned by Ardian (Paris) since 2024, after the wind-down of UK-listed D9. For most European buyers that is a sovereignty feature (EU jurisdiction); for buyers needing national control it is a fact to weigh. Iceland is EEA, not EU — data-transfer mechanics differ subtly from an EU member state.

Confidence

Capacity: B (corroborated secondary sources; pending Verne’s reply). Ownership: A (corroborated directly against Verne’s own published timeline — 2021 D9 acquisition, 2024 Ardian $1.2B commitment — primary-sourced rather than secondary). PUE: A (primary, operator-disclosed per methodology v1.0 grading — Verne publishes multi-year Scope 1/2/3 and PUE figures; no third-party auditor is named on the page, a distinction we flag rather than silently upgrade to “audited”). This assessment is a first pass from public sources only; Verne’s right of reply was sent 23 July 2026 and the response window is open until 6 August 2026.
